In a rare break from cat-related posts, we share some quick tips on running your own blog

When we first started Best For Cats, we wanted to create a blog where we could share cat pictures and videos, as well as useful products and articles for fellow cat owners. What started out as a fairly modest website grew into the site you’re on now, with lots of posts on products and services relating to cat health, behaviour, news and reviews. Our aim is to cover anything we think cat owners will find interesting, and although we don’t have writers or staff (the two of us along with a couple of friends run the blog outside of our day jobs), it’s been incredibly rewarding to interact and engage with cat owners and cat-related businesses from all over the world. Running your own blog also opens up other opportunities. We’ve been honoured to run some wonderful guest content covering everything from protecting indoor cats outside, to pet portraiture services and animated infographics from big organisations like Sainsbury’s Bank.

We won’t lie, running a website takes time, but if we can do it then anyone can, and below is a very quick guide to a few things you’ll need to get started.

Choosing a domain

To get started with running your own blog, you’ll need your own domain name. allows you to setup a blog without worrying about hosting or domain names, but if you want more control over how your blog looks, we’d recommend running your own.

Pick a domain name that’s catchy and then check if it’s available. if it is, great! All you need  to do is purchase the domain through a domain registrar. We’re big fan of for purchasing domains.

Hosting your own blog

So you’ve got your domain, now you need someone to host your website for you. Hosting costs have failed massively, and you don’t need to pay a lot to get secure, stable hosting that includes great support as well as things like email addresses. We use SiteGround to host Best For Cats and their support has been superb. They have dedicated WordPress hosting which is perfect for blogs and websites running WordPress, and they even have a 1-click installation service. Web Hosting

Running your own blog with WordPress

WordPress is a fantastic and easy to use Content Management System (CMS) which lets you write and publish content, as well as build pages, galleries and links. As a publisher you have lots of control over when and how you publish your content, including automatically posting features to social media profiles; really useful and time-saving.

As standard WordPress looks a little basic, so you’ll want to look at a theme to change how your website looks. Acosmin build beautiful WoirdPress themes which are great for blogs or online magazines, or alternatively ThemeForest sell lots of premium themes which you can demo before you buy.

This is just a very quick look into what you need to stat hosting and running your own blog or website, whether cat-related or otherwise. Yes, it can take a lot of time to get a website off the ground, but it’s also incredibly rewarding, a bit like owning rescue cats! If you do decide to give it a go, let us know!
