Updated: Keeping your cat hydrated is important, so we’ve looked at some of the best pet fountains for cats on the market

There’s a lot to be said for having a constant source of running water accessible to your kitties. Naturally occurring running water is much fresher than stagnant water and much more appealing to cats (and other animals), as the flowing water constantly re-oxygenates. This process is called aeration and it makes the water more appealing to drink, but animals can also be drawn by instinct to moving water. As we’ve covered in articles on hydration and FLUTD, one of the best ways to keep your cat healthy is to introduce more water into their diet and routine, and especially for indoor cats one of the most effective ways to do this is to introduce a pet water fountain into your home. So without further ado, let’s look at 5 of the best pet fountains for cats.

1. Catit Flower Fountain

Starting off with our favourite cat fountain, this is another great quality product from one of our favourite manufacturers, Catit. The Catit Flower Fountain is a beautifully designed, innovative cat fountain that brings a touch of the outdoors to your living room or kitchen.

Based on the previous Catit Senses Water Fountain, this model updates the design and look whilst keeping the same great features of the older model. The flower is a wonderful touch and a really innovative method of splitting up the flow of water into 6 distinct ‘streams’ which flow back into the base of the fountain. Our cats were both a little surprised at first when water started flowing out of the flower, but soon got used to it!

Ever so slightly noisier than other fountains in the list (mainly due to the trickling water from the flower), this is still a wonderful product, and a very well designed, self-contained fountain for your cats.

2. PetSafe Drinkwell Ceramic Avalon Pet Fountain

The PetSafe Drinkwell Ceramic Avalon pet fountain is at the upper-end of the price range for cat fountains, but certainly warrants its place as one of the best pet fountains for cats.

Whilst other pet fountains are constructed almost entirely of plastic, the PetSafe model is made from a high-quality ceramic. Not only is this dishwasher safe, but ceramics don’t suffer from some of the transferable, porous qualities of certain plastics, which can sometimes add a very subtle taste or smell to the water which turns cats off.

The PetSafe fountain uses activated carbon replacement filters made from coconut shells, and along with the pump keep the water constantly circulating which prevents bacteria growing and the water nice and fresh.

The large 2 litre capacity means less-frequent topping up is required, and the stylish design and high-quality materials mean the fountain fits in to most kitchens or conservatories without proving to be an eyesore.

What we like:

  • Very high-quality ceramic construction
  • Stylish design
  • Dishwasher safe so easy to clean
  • Large 2 litre capacity

Score: 4/5

3. Cat Mate Pet Fountain

One of the most popular pet fountains for cats on the market, the Cat Mat Pet Fountain is still a feature-rich and highly effective fountain for keeping your cat hydrated.

Even with the adjustable pump turned up to maximum water flow, the fountain is super quiet in operation unless you get very close, with just the sound of the flowing water audible from a distance.

The fountain takes the form of 3 different pools of water at different heights, giving your cat the option of different levels to drink at. Cats typically like to stay alert and aware of their surroundings, even whilst drinking, and the top-most pool of water allows this. The ramps leading down the fountain completely reduce any splashing, so standing the fountain on a mat isn’t necessary.

The all-plastic design means this isn’t the best looking cat fountain on the market, but it’s discrete and sturdy, and still proves to be a talking point amongst guests some 6 months after we first purchased it.

The replacement carbon filters are reasonably priced at £4.95 for two, and a number of third-party options are also available. Overall a really solid product, and well worth the outlay. The combination of features and cost means the Cat Mate Pet Fountain fully deserves its place on our list of the best pet fountains for cats.

Update April 2016: Shortly after we posted this roundup, the pump on our Cat Mate fountain sadly broke 🙁 We’d unplugged the unit to clean it out, and on reassembling and turning the power back on, the pump just wouldn’t start again. We’ll be buying a replacement pump and it seems we were just unfortunate, but it’s something worth keeping in mind.

What we like:

  • One of the cheaper models of pet fountains for cats on the market
  • Cheap replacement filters
  • Isolated Pump System for very quiet operation
  • Several pools at different levels for your cat to drink from

4. PetSafe Drinkwell Platinum Pet Fountain

Coming in at around the mid-level price range, the PetSafe Drinkwell Platinum Pet Fountain is a popular model amongst pet owners, and for good reason.

PetSafe’s second model in this roundup, it’s safe to say they know a thing or two about designing and manufacturing effective, long-lasting pet fountains, and this model is no different.

First off is the massive 5 litre capacity, reducing the need to refill the fountain. The free falling water creates a wonderful, soothing noise as the water lands in the collection pool at the bottom of the unit, enticing cats to come and try the fountain.

The fountain includes a ‘pre-filter’ for catching hairs and larger debris before anything gets to the pump, which is a great touch.

Whilst not the best looking fountain in our roundup, the unit is dishwasher proof, and is also available in a number of different configurations to suit various budgets and cat sizes.

What we like:

  • Up to a huge 5 litre capacity
  • Wide range of sizes, models and finishes
  • Pre-filter for catching hairs before they reach the motor

Score: 4/5

5. PetSafe Drinkwell 360 Stainless Steel Pet Fountain

Rounding off our list, last but certainly not least is another stylish, super-high quality cat fountain from PetSafe, the Drinkwell 360 Stainless Steel Pet Fountain.

Whilst not the cheapest fountain on the list, the stylish stainless steel finish ensure the product is durable, dishwasher safe and looks fantastic in the flesh, making a perfect addition to any kitchen floor.

Not only is this cat fountain a looker, but it packs some innovative features as well. Favourite of ours are the included interchangeable spout rings, which create up to five individual streams.

If you have more than one cat you’re expecting to use the fountain at any one time, this is a wonderful addition.

What we like:

  • Beautifully designed
  • High quality stainless steel finish
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Interchangeable Spout Rings create up to five individual streams

  1. Thank a lot for this comprehensive information ! I was wondering if you knew of any fountains that allow you to control the amount of flow of the falling stream. My cat likes the faucet to just barely trickle, So I’m looking for a fountain that allows me to control the amount of flow. Any ideas? Much appreciated!

  2. Drinkwell 360 Stainless Steel Pet Fountain.
I had to return this product after two months of use.
1st the buildup stains from the spring water would not scrub off.
2nd my cats would drink from the bowl and with the water flowing down, the cats would Experience water dripping on the top of their heads.
3rd I had to adjust the pump to the slowest flow of water because anything faster would scare my cats. This caused the water fountain to be loud.
Overall the worst product I have ever purchased and I was very happy that PetsMart agreed to refund my purchase.
