By popular demand, we roundup some of the best cat litter for indoor cats available in 2020

Cat litter boxes, especially for indoor cats, are one of the most important parts of maintaining a suitable, stress-free environment for your cats. Cats are fastidious cleaners, so keeping your cats’ litter boxes as clean and fresh as possible is a good way to avoid undue stress and toilet problems, which can lead to more serious complications. An important part of this is the cat litter you use, and today we’re looking at some of the best cat litter for indoor cats. There’s a huge amount of brands available to buy online, made from different materials each with various pros and cons.

Before we look at cat litter, what about looking after litter boxes?

Generally speaking, the number of litter boxes in the house should be greater than the number of indoor cats (so 3 litter boxes for a 2 cat household). To keep your cat happy, scoop out and top up the litter boxes at least once a day, or more frequently if required in order to keep your cats happy. Some cats (ours included) won’t go near a litter box containing mess, and who are we to blame them!

Old litter should be completely replaced at least once a week and replaced with fresh cat litter, and this is a great time to clean out your litter boxes. Throw away all of the dirty litter and give the litter boxes a good rinse down and clean with some warm, soapy water. You can buy cat-safe cleaning products for this, although we don’t think they’re absolutely necessary; do avoid any strong bathroom cleaners or bleach, as anything with a strong chemical content or even smell can be off-putting to your kitty.

Once that’s done, you’re ready to add the new litter, so let’s look at some of our favourites!

1. World’s Best Cat Litter

Starting our list is World’s Best Cat Litter, a bold name for a cat litter that comes highly rated by cat owners. Made from natural whole-kernel corn it boasts a naturally porous makeup that keeps odours inside the litter.

The first thing we noticed when opening the bag is how good it smells! The 100% natural materials used means World’s Best Cat Litter is a great choice for indoor cat owners looking for a natural cat litter that’s also odour-neutralising and pleasingly dust-free.

Available in several sizes, we plumped for the 12.7KG sack, which spread across our litter boxes lasted just short of a month — which we thought was reasonable — and went some way towards justifying the comparatively high asking price. What we love about this litter the most though is just how well it clumps.

Worlds Best Cat Litter is also available in smaller 3KG bags

Most litter on the market is advertised as ‘quick-clumping’, but in use World’s Best Cat Litter really did clump exceptionally well. As soon as one of the cats had been for a wee, the affected litter clumped together into a neat little ball, which was easy to scoop out and left the dry and clean litter untouched. We found that this meant much less clean litter was wasted. To top if off, there was a refreshing lack of cat litter sprinkled outside the door of the litter box, result!

What we like:

  • 100% natural ingredients
  • Really does clump well, the best we’ve used
  • Dust free and organic
  • Lasts well

What we don’t like:

  • Honestly not much, but if we’re being picky this is one of the more expensive litters available

Price: £27.98 plus FREE delivery for a 12.7KG sack
Score: 5/5

2. Catsan Hygiene Litter

On the opposite side of the cat litter spectrum is Catsan. Often rated as some of the best cat litter for indoor cats on the market, and certainly one of the best-selling, Catsan Hygiene Litter is next in our roundup.

The litter consists of natural quartz sand and chalk, which gives it its distinct white colour. According to the Catsan literature, thousands of micropores on the surface of the litter rapidly absorb moisture, a bit like tiny sponges, safely locking it in.

In use, we found that poop was easy to scoop out and discard, without taking lots of litter with it. The nature of the litter (almost like small chalky stones) meant that kitty poo wasn’t completely ‘sealed’ by the litter, meaning the odour did leak out of the litter boxes. In terms of cat urine though, the litter did its job very well, with very little in the way of odours until it was clearly ready to be changed.

On first use when emptying the sack into the litter box, we did find Catsan Hygiene Litter produced a lot of dust, however this quickly settled down and wasn’t something we noticed until it came time to empty the litter boxes. Once the litter gets wet, it becomes slightly discoloured and crumbly, so dirty litter is easy to spot. We found that it didn’t clump though, and the dirty litter was difficult to scoop out without falling through the holes in our scoop. (Note: Catsan do produce a separate clumping litter, which we’ve yet to try).

One minor thing we noticed was that due to the size of the stones making up the litter, our cats tended to kick it out of the litter box, leading to little white lumps of litter dotted around the house! Although not without its faults, we do like Catsan Hygiene Litter and it’s reasonably priced. This was all based on a 20L sack of Catsan, but it turns out they make something else…

The Catsan Smart Pack

We like Catsan’s Hygiene Litter, but as with all litter, once a week it needs to be discarded, with the litter box cleaned out before new litter is added. With the Smart Packs, this becomes a whole lot easier.

The Catsan Smart Pack

The Catsan Smart Pack is an all-in-one cat litter solution. The Smart Pack takes the form of a plastic bag filled with Catsan’s Hygiene Litter above, but with an elasticated hem that wraps tightly around your litter box base. At the bottom of the bag is an absorbent liner, maximising the amount of cat wee absorption and helping to keep odour under control. And the greatest part? After a week, simply take out the bag, pull the hem tight (like a bin liner), tie it up and throw away the bag. No fuss, no litter box to clean out. Simply throw it out and replace with a new pack — marvellous.

What we like:

  • Hygienic, affordable and easy to use
  • The bright white colour looks clean and is easy to spot when dirty and in need of changing, but is also excellent for seeing if your cat’s urine is discoloured (potential signs of cystitis or FLUTD)
  • The smart packs are nothing short of genius; convenient and really easy to use

What we don’t like:

  • Can be a little dusty when first adding to the litter box
  • Doesn’t clump

Price: Smart packs — £6.98 for 2, Sacks — £10.00
Score: 4/5

3. Pettex Pampuss Woodbase Cat Litter

One of the cheaper cat litters available on the market, Pettex Pampuss Woodbase Cat Litter still comes highly-recommended by cat owners, who praise its natural recycled material content and high absorbency.

Pettex Pampuss Woodbase Cat Litter

Available in a huge 30L sack for a little over £10.00, this really is superb value for money in terms of quantity. Made from 100% timber, one of the nice things about the litter is the pine smell, which seemed to go down well with our cats as much as it did with us! The litter takes the form of quite large ‘pellets’ which resulted in less litter finding its way outside the litter box.

In practice we found that the litter didn’t clump, with the pellets instead turning to a mushy substance when wet and dirty. As with Catsan, the pellets didn’t do a great deal in terms of stopping the dreaded cat poop odour, but cat wee was neutralised very effectively. Overall a really solid budget choice of cat litter, which lasted for ages!

What we like:

  • Lovely pine smell
  • Highly absorbent
  • Great value for money

What we don’t like:

  • Doesn’t clump

Price: £10.90 for a 30L sack
Score: 4/5

4. Cats Best Oko Plus Clumping Litter

Another hugely popular clumping litter with indoor cat owners, Cats Best Oko Plus Clumping Litter is made from 100% organic fibres, which assist in binding together damp litter and trapping in any odours. The litter claims to be the only wood-based clump forming, biodegradeable eco cat litter on the market, definitely strong credentials for anyone looking for an eco cat litter.

Cats Best Oko Plus Clumping Litter

We love that the litter is available in a convenient range of sizes (4.3KG, 8.6KG and 13KG sacks), and Cats Best Oko Plus Clumping Litter is good value for an ecologically sound product. The cat litter smells great, isn’t particularly dusty and in use clumps extraordinarily well — seriously impressive for a wood based litter.

We’re fans of any product that can help minimise environmental impact, and this is where Cats Best Oko Plus Clumping Litter really comes into its own. Not only is the litter 100% organic, it is fully compostable and completely biodegradable. We also found that the litter stayed fresh and lasted for ages, which certainly helps to offset the higher asking price.

Downsides? We found that the litter did track quite a bit outside the box, so we’d recommend a cat litter mat (click here for some popular choices) as these can really help keep stray litter to just outside the box and cut down on tracking.

What we like:

  • Great eco litter made from 100% organic fibres
  • Wood based and clumps!
  • Great smelling cat litter
  • 100% biodegradable and compostable
  • Long lasting

What we don’t like:

  • Not the cheapest
  • Does track a fair bit outside the litter box

Price: Starting at £7.99 for a 4.5KG bag
Score: 4.5/5

5. Felipure Pro-Clumping Cat Litter

A brand new litter in the UK, Felipure is a fast-clumping cat litter using natural mineral granules which quickly absorb liquid.

Felipure Pro-Clumping Cat Litter
Felipure Pro-Clumping Cat Litter

Coming in a (very nicely designed) 16KG box, this is certainly the nicest packaged litter we’ve ever come across. Felipure have certainly put some effort into marketing the product as well, with a lovely website featuring plenty of information on the litter, which is available both unscented and with a cut grass scent.

All this would be for nothing if the cat litter wasn’t effective, and we have to say this is up there with the most impressive cat litters we’ve used. Although a little dusty straight our of the box, there’s no airborne dust present in the litter boxes and very little makes its way outside the litter box opening.

What we were most impressed with was just how well it clumps. The wet litter forms little balls, clumping very well indeed and with no damp or dirty litter left behind. These are easy to pick out and throw away, and the litter also does a fantastic job of keeping odour away. Very, very impressive, and if you’re looking for an alternative to World’s Best above we’d recommend giving this a go.

What we like:

  • Excellent clumping litter
  • Highly absorbent
  • Very effective at blocking odour
  • We’ll admit it, we were sold by the lovely packaging too

What we don’t like:

  • Not the cheapest by a stretch, but does last a reasonably long time

Price: ~£22.00 for a 16L box, available from Pets Corner
Score: 4/5

Useful extras for your cat litter

Cleaning out the litter tray isn’t a job any cat owner looks forward to — cat wee is potent stuff! — but as well as a good-quality cat litter there are a few bits that can make life easier.

Trixie Cat Litter Tray Mat

Trixie Cat Litter Tray Mat
Trixie Cat Litter Tray Mat

One of the best accessories we can recommend, a cat litter tray makes a great addition to a cats litter box and helps massively with limiting the amount of cat litter that gets tracked around the house! Our favourite is the Trixie Cat Litter Tray Mat, which is available in small and large sizes and comes in an attractive dark grey/anthracite colour. The PVC mat catches litter as your cat leaves the litter box, and helps keep the surrounding area nice and tidy.

Catit Style Hooded Cat Litter Box

Catit Style Hooded Cat Litter Box

Our favourite litter box of our indoor cats, so much so that we bought three! The Catit litter box is large enough for really big (~5–6KG) cats, features a sturdy flap and the locks either side keep the lid firmly in place. The hood section lifts up, making it easier to access and scoop out, and the filter on top is a brilliant touch, helping to neutralise odours.

  1. How deep should you fill a large box? And best littler for those on budget for white cat whose pee Is smelly please

  2. Hi Kate, thanks for the comment! We’d recommend no more than a couple of inches deep with litter, and some cats (especially long-haired cats) prefer less.

For litter on a budget, we’d recommend Sanicat, which is a great bulk buy and helps combat odours:

We’ve not tried these, but you can buy cat litter deoderizers/fresheners which can help combat any odours (although worth noting some cats can be put off by particularly strong perfumes/smells):

Let us know how you get on!
